Sharks, Snakes, Mistakes. Oh, My.

Aaliyah

When Aaliyah finally woke up, streams of sunlight were filtering through the car’s tinted windows warming her face.

At first, it was relaxing.

The warmth. The blanket. The steady vibration of the car on the road.

She was pulled from all of that the second memories from the night before began to trickle back into her mind.

She rushed to check her phone and saw four notifications.

Adolfo: We got past your guard dog.

Lumi: We made it. God your girlfriend’s like a scared animal.

Imani: Don’t worry I accept your apology. :) :) :) I’m heading home now. Have fun at your business thing.

The last notification on her phone was letting her know that she had been tagged in a post somewhere.

She opened the app and saw that it was from Adolfo. A picture of him, Imani, and Lumi on her living room couch; everybody had a blanket, every eye reflected the TV, and every hand had either a glass of dark liquor, bubbling cola, or a hand of cards.

“How’d everything go?” Monique asked from the front.

“Apparently, way better than I thought.”

“Good that means you’re driving now.”

“In just a minute. I think they got Imani drunk and I have to know how that happened,” she tried to argue but she could already feel the car pulling over to the shoulder of the road.

Aaliyah crawled out of the backseat, stretching her arms and legs. She relished in the tingle that spread through her joints as she did.

Just as a yawn took her, expanding her stomach and arching her back, Monique shot out a hand and jabbed her in the gut.

She nearly tripped in her attempt to fold over herself so the subsequent coughs wouldn't choke her on their way out.

"I hate you."

"No, you don't. And don't forget you owe me," Monique laughed.

"Owe you for what?" Aaliyah asked, indignantly, gathering herself so she could slide into the driver's seat.

"It was my amazing idea to have your friends go hang out with Imani."

She wanted to say something snarky back, but she decided that they’d earned the praise this time.

"You're right. Thank you, Monique."

"Thank you, Monique, for what?"

"Thank you, Monique, for being the best big sibling in the world."

Aaliyah could hear them reach inside their bag.

"Good! Now, say it again so I can send it to Callum."

She nodded, understanding. "Bring your phone closer so we can make sure it's clear."
